Outback Bowl Betting Matchup

The SEC and Big Ten have long kicked up fierce battles in the Outback Bowl and the 2007 edition should be no different, with both conferences boasting top programs.

Last year, the 2006 Outback Bowl started off a rout and ended up too close for comfort for Florida. Iowa rallied from 31-7 down to pull within a touchdown in the fourth quarter, but they couldn’t catch up.

The win allowed Florida to avenge their loss in the Outback Bowl two years earlier to Iowa. The Hawkeyes had been expected to contend for the Big Ten title but a stunning 23-3 loss to Iowa State on Sept. 10 killed any hope the Hawkeyes had of playing in one of the big bowl games.

The problem for the 7-4 Hawkeyes had been a 94th-ranked pass defense that gave up too many big plays. Urban Meyer's coaching debut didn't start off well for the Gators. Quarterback Chris Leak couldn't adjust to Meyer's famed spread offense as Florida finished with a disappointing 8-3 record.

About the Outback Bowl 2007

The Outback Bowl is a post-season college football game that has been played in Tampa, Florida since 1986.

The 2006 Outback Bowl was played on 2 January 2005 at the 65,647-seat Raymond James Stadium in Tampa. Iowa represented NCAA football's Big 10 Conference in the game, while Florida took to the field for the SEC.

This game was a repeat of the 2004 Outback Bowl matchup, which saw Iowa triumph over Florida by 37-17 and Florida avenged it by streaking out to a 24-7 halftime lead, then holding on while Iowa QB Drew Tate attempted a comeback.

Iowa outranked the Gators in passing, rushing and points scored and had been favored by a single point at Bodog.com.

History of the Outback Bowl

The Outback Bowl features teams from the NCAA's Southeastern and Big 10 Conferences, and is usually played on New Year's Day. The current minimum payout is $2.85 million per team.

The game is currently named the Outback Bowl in acknowledgement of the sponsorship of the Outback Steakhouse. From December 1986 to January 1995 the game was known as the Hall of Fame Bowl.

Florida held the ball for more than 35 minutes on offense and rang up 450 yards in offense in the 2006 Outback Bowl. They avenged the 2004 Outback Bowl loss to the same Iowa Hawkeyes by beating them 31-24.

Florida also lost the 2003 Outback Bowl, falling 38-30 to Michigan. Georgia won the 2005 Outback Bowl with a tight 24-21 victory over Wisconsin.
