Music City Bowl Betting Matchup

Teams from the ACC and SEC will hook up again Dec. 29, 2006 when the Music City Bowl kicks off. Last year, it was the ACC’s Virginia Cavalier handling the Minnesota Golden Gophers 34-31.

Laurence Maroney and Gary Russell were expected to push the 7-4 Golden Gophers to victory, but running back Wali Lundy teamed with QB Marques Hagans to pull out the victory. The Cavaliers had countered with the 70th-rated offense in the nation, which played a big part in their disappointing 6-5 record.

Minnesota had been trying to win its third Music City Bowl in five seasons. They won in 2004 and 2002.

History of the Music City Bowl

Starting in 2006, the Music City Bowl will feature teams from the Atlantic Coast Conference and the Southeastern Conference, replacing the matchup between the Southeastern Conference and the Big 10 Conference that had been the Music City Bowl's format since 2002.

The 2004 Music City Bowl saw Minnesota win 20-16 against Alabama. Marion Barber was the game MVP for the Golden Gophers, who also won the 2002 Music City Bowl with a 29-14 win over Arkansas.

Sandwiched between the two Minnesota wins was a 28-14 victory by Auburn over Wisconsin in the 2003 Music City Bowl. Tiger QB Jason Campbell was named game MVP for his efforts against the Badgers.

In 2005 the SEC did not have enough qualifying teams, so the ACC's Virginia appeared in the game, winning it 34-31 against Minnesota. The game initially was played between SEC and Big East Conference Teams, but turned into a battle of running backs Laurence Maroney and Wali Lundy.

Originally named the Gaylord Hotels Music City Bowl, the name of this postseason game was changed in 2003 to the Gaylords Music City Bowl Presented by Bridgestone. The bowl’s previous sponsors were American General Life & Accident (1998), and the dot.com victim homepoint.com (1999). The Music City Bowl was without a sponsor in 2000 and 2001.
