Hawaii Bowl Betting Matchup

If the 2006 version of the Hawaii Bowl matches the drama of the 2005 game, this will be a real treat to watch. Central Florida made its bowl-game debut in fine style, rallying 10 points late in the game against Nevada, only to lose 49-48 in overtime – on a missed point-after attempt, of all things.

The Wolf Pack had shared the WAC title with Boise State after stunning then-No. 16 Fresno State, 38-35, on Nov. 26, 2005. Predicted by many pundits to post a losing record, Nevada made its first bowl appearance in nine years with an 8-3 record. On the other side, UCF coach George O'Leary had reason to smile. In only in his second season, O'Leary led the school to its first bowl game with a record of 8-4. The accomplishment seemed all the more remarkable when you consider UCF finished 0-11 last year.

The Sheraton Hawaii Bowl is a post-season NCAA football game that has been played annually in Honolulu, Hawaii since 2002.

The 5th annual Hawaii Bowl will be played at the Aloha Stadium in Honolulu, which has a seating capacity of 50,000. The Western Athletic Conference will send the No. 2 school from league play against the fifth-place team from the Pac 10.

Last year, Central Florida made its post-season debut in the 2005 Hawaii Bowl, losing 49-48 in a wild game that ended on a missed extra point in overtime. The Golden Knights had their defensive hands full with Nevada's B.J. Mitchell, who rushed for a WAC season-record 1,221 yards. On the season, the Wolf Pack had averaged more than 450 yards offense per game.

Kicker Matt Prater had nailed a 46-yard field goal in the final two minutes to give UCF a chance, but then missed the chip shot in overtime.

History of the Hawaii Bowl

The first Hawaii Bowl was played on Christmas Day 2002, under the sponsorship of ConAgra Foods. After a multi-year sponsorship agreement was reached with Sheraton Hotels & Resorts in 2003, the official name of the bowl became, and remains, the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl.

In the inaugural game in 2002, hometown favorites Hawaii hit the field for the Western Athletic Conference, with the Tulane Green Wave representing Conference USA. Despite leading through the end of the first half by a score of 14-6, Hawaii failed to answer 20 points scored by Tulane in the third quarter. Tulane held onto their lead and eventually triumphed by a score of 36-28.

Hawaii made their second Hawaii Bowl appearance in 2003, this time against the Houston Cougars. This exciting, high-scoring matchup saw the two teams tied 34-34 after regulation time on the strength of a scoring pass from Houston freshman Kevin Kolb to teammate Vincent Marshall with only 22 seconds left on the clock. The game was not decided until the third overtime, with Hawaii eventually prevailing 54-48.

With Alabama-Birmingham representing Conference USA, the third Hawaii Bowl saw the third straight appearance for the Hawaii Warriors. In an exceptional offensive performance, Hawaii's Timmy Chang threw for 405 yards and accounted for five touchdowns, leading Hawaii to a 49-40 victory over UAB.

Last season, Central Florida capped a remarkable turnaround from an 0-11 season with a solid bowl effort. The Golden Knights scored 10 points in the final 90 seconds to send the game to overtime, but lost 49-48 to Nevada. B.J. Mitchell and Robert Hubbard combined for more than 300 rushing yards and five running touchdowns for Nevada.
