Armed Forces Bowl Betting Matchup

A pair of lowly 6-5 squads did battle last year when the Kansas Jayhawks took on the Houston Cougars in Fort Worth, Texas. Kansas - led by senior linebacker Nick Reid, the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year - entered with momentum after closing the regular season with a 24-21 overtime win over Iowa State.

But the Fort Worth Bowl (the game becomes the Armed Forces Bowl in 2006) was no contest as the Big 12 rep pounded Houston 42-13. QB Jason Swanson threw four TDs in the game – one more than he had thrown all season.

About the Armed Forces Bowl 2006

The Armed Forces Bowl is a post-season NCAA football game that has been played annually in Forth Worth, Texas since 2003.

The first Armed Forces Bowl goes this season, but it has been played three times previously under its former name - the Fort Worth Bowl. It has been played at Amon G. Carter Stadium, which has a seating capacity of 44,000. The Kansas Jayhawks represented the Big 12 Conference, while the Houston Cougars of the Conference USA were the foes in last year’s contest.

The 2005 Armed Forces Bowl marked the second time in three years that Kansas made a bowl appearance. Houston went into the game on a five-game bowl losing streak, while the Jayhawks hadn't won a bowl contest in a decade. Kansas ended its streak, while it continued for Houston.

History of the Armed Forces Bowl

The Armed Forces Bowl was first played in 2003 as the Fort Worth Bowl, and was created to feature teams from NCAA football's Conference USA and the Big 12. In acknowledgement of sponsor support, the official name of the bowl was the PlainsCapital Fort Worth Bowl.

The inaugural Armed Forces Bowl in 2003 received a bid from Boise State because the Big 12 did not have enough bowl-eligible teams to fill all of its bowl-allotted spots for that year.

In that year, 18th-ranked Boise State pulled off a bowl victory against Texas Christian by a score of 34-31, with Boise's Ryan Dinwiddie throwing for 325 yards and three touchdowns. The Broncos trailed 31-27 going into the fourth quarter, but secured their victory on an 18-yard touchdown pass to Derek Schouman with 12:43 remaining.

The Big 12 again failed to provide enough bowl-eligible teams in 2004, with the bid for that spot going to the Marshall Thundering Herd. Despite suffering from a severely injured right hand, Cincinnati quarterback Gino Guidugli led his team to an impressive 32-14 over Marshall, throwing for 231 yards and two touchdowns.

In the final game as the Fort Worth Bowl, Kansas ended a 10-year bowl drought with an easy 42-13 victory over Houston. Jayhawk QB Jason Swanson led the way with four scoring passes.
