Liberty Bowl Betting Matchup
Underdog Tulsa did the Conference USA proud with a 31-24 victory over Fresno State last year in the Liberty Bowl and the conference will face an SEC foe in 2006.
Tulsa scored a late TD and intercepted Paul Pinegar twice in the fourth quarter to defeat Fresno State. It was the first Tulsa bowl win since the old Freedom Bowl back in 1991. MVP Paul Davis ran for the winning TD and passed for two others as the Golden Hurricane blew past the Bulldogs.
The Golden Hurricane boasted a high-octane offense led by tight end Garrett Mills. Tulsa (8-4) rode a three-game winning streak into the Liberty Bowl and proved more than a tough matchup for Fresno State. The Bulldogs (8-4) had the fifth-best scoring offense but came into the game demoralized. After nearly upsetting USC on Nov. 19 in a memorable game, Fresno State lost back-to-back contests against Nevada and Louisiana Tech as they limped into bowl season.

The game was played in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania until 1963. Due to poor attendance, the 1994 game was moved to an indoor venue in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Since 1965 the game has been played at its current home in Memphis, Tennessee.
From 1997 to 2003 the game was sponsored by AXA Financial, and was known as the AXA Liberty Bowl. With the sponsorship in 2004 of auto parts retailer AutoZone, the bowl became officially known as the AutoZone Liberty Bowl.
