Emerald Bowl Betting Matchup

Maybe this year, the Emerald Bowl will have two teams that actually want to play. Georgia Tech seemed disinterested before the game and during, as they were routed 38-10 by Utah.

Yellow Jacket faithful had wanted a bowl game closer to home, but took this game when no Pac 10 team was bowl-eligible. They brought one of the nation's best wide receivers in Calvin Johnson, and a solid defense.

But neither had much impact for Georgia Tech, who enjoyed the highlight of a 7-4 season in a 14-10 upset of then-No. 3 Miami in South Florida. After finishing off an undefeated season with a win over Pittsburgh in the Fiesta Bowl last season, Utah came down to earth with a 6-5 record. The Utes needed a 41-34 win over rival BYU in their final game just to be bowl eligible.

History of the Emerald Bowl

The Emerald Bowl typically features teams from the NCAA's Pac-10 and Mountain West NCAA football Conferences. In the 2004 Emerald Bowl, Navy from the I-A Independents Conference played in place of a Pac-10 team, because the Pac-10 did not have enough teams qualify.

For the same reasons, Georgia Tech from ACC played in place of a Pac-10 team in the 2005 Emerald Bowl, a fact that made the Yellow Jackets grumble since they had hoped for a bowl game closer to Atlanta.

The Emerald Bowl was known as the San Francisco Bowl (officially, the Diamond Walnut San Francisco Bowl) from 2002 to 2003.
