Kansas vs. Memphis
The Final game of the 2008 Men’s NCAA tournament showcased two of the top teams in college basketball, the best of the very best, the cream of the crop, and the game itself…Classic. The first half saw the Memphis Tigers and the Kansas Jayhawks exchange baskets back and forth like two heavyweight fighters going toe-to-toe. First Chris Douglas- Roberts got hot as he picked up right where he left off in the semi-final against UCLA. CDR was showing Kansas a little bit of everything in his repertoire, hitting shots from the outside, taking it the cup with gusto and making difficult mid range jumpers. Kansas countered by attacking Memphis inside. With a battery of talented post players, the Jayhawks were able to score effectively on the Tigers frontcourt. The two teams raced up and down the court, making dazzling plays at full speed, playing above the rim at all times and showing a spectacular display of agility, power and creativity. Derrick Rose had a very quiet first half as he only took 4 shots and finished the half with 2 points. Kansas made a late run to close out the half on the strength of Darrel Arthur who was magnificent; he would finish with a team high 20- points. At the end of the first half, Kansas led by 5 points.
Second Half
Memphis erased the deficit quickly in the second half as they stormed out of the gates with purpose. Kansas had switched their defense to a box and 1 to contain CDR and Derrick Rose began to take advantage. Rose took the game into his hands, scoring 11-points in 7 minutes to give his team a 9 point lead late in the second half. With under two minutes to play, Kansas resorted to fouling the Tigers, in hopes that their early season free throw shooting woes would return. And return they would; CDR would miss 3 key free throws and Derrick Rose missed the front end of a 1 and 1, as Kansas chipped away at the lead. Every kid has dreamed about the moment, the one shining moment… Down by 3 –points, the seconds ticking down on their season, on their championship, on their legacy… Super Mario Chalmers was ready for it. Chalmers received a hand-off pass and shot a fade-away 3 – pointer which caught nothing but the bottom of the net to tie the game at 63-63 and send the game into overtime, the first since 1997. Having come so close to glory, and with Dorsey fouled out of the game, Memphis seemed to have all of the air taken out their sails. With momentum on their side, Kansas would outscore Memphis 12-5 in the extra period, capped off with a thunderous alley-oop dunk by Darrell Arthur that sealed the deal, 75-68. Kansas is your 2008 NCAA Men’s Basketball National Champions.
