Since 1960, only eight of the 16 countries have won the event. Since 1968, Germany has won the tournament the most out of any country, winning it a total of three times: 1972, 1980 and 1996. Germany's championship run in 1996 featured the first golden goal in the history of the tournament. France is the only other team to win the event multiple times, in both 1984 and 2000. Surprisingly, Italy has not won the tournament since 1968, Spain has not won since 1964 and Romania, Sweden, Switzerland, Austria and Portugal have never won the event.
