by Bodog Sportsbook | Jan 25 2008

This Saturday afternoon Melbourne time (9:30 p.m. EST in the U.S.) brings tennis fans what may be the hottest matchup in women’s tennis history. Squaring off to win a Grand Slam are
Maria Sharapova and Ana Ivanovic. Who needs a red carpet and an Oscar when you have these ladies, a tennis court and a huge cup - an Aussie Open trophy?
Sharapova’s straight sets loss to Serena Williams during last year’s Aussie Open is old news for Sharapova. Wasn’t the happiest day of her life, but she got over it because it’s a new year and another chance to win her third Grand Slam. During the tennis offseason she followed a strict training schedule where she sharpened up her powerful backhands and serve. This week she beat Justine Henin 6-0 in a set on Tuesday and then on beat Jelena Jankovic 6-3 and 6-1.
Ivanovic comes into the game after beating Venus Williams and Daniela Hantuchova to face off with Sharapova for the fifth time and the first in a final. At last year’s French Open semifinal, Ivanova prevailed over Sharapova and she’s hoping for a similar outcome. Sharapova on the other hand is probably hoping for a replay of the 6-2, 6-1 annihilation of Ivanova during one of their matches at the WTA Tour Championships last year.
Both of these women are even at 2-2 in head-to-head matches, but at the end of this Open, Sharapova will finish at No. 5 in the world and Ivanova at No. 2.
Now we just have to focus on watching their game play instead of just them.
