30 Million Reasons To Play Hard

During the 2007 World Series, New York Yankee Alex Rodriguez opted out of his 10-year, $252 million dollar contract. At the time, Rodriguez came off like a crazy media whore and it didn’t sit well with Red Sox fans. Big shock. Well, it seems that A-Rod was crazy… like a fox, as he re-signed with the Yankees for $275 million over 10 years. It seems like a sticking point may have been a $30 million dollar difference.

Understandably not wanting to guarantee the $30 million, the Yankees offered it in the form of a performance-based bonus. Interesting… So, the better he plays, he more he gets paid. Thankfully, these types of bonuses have been used more and more in past years as insurance for the owners and incentives for the players. For GMs, it’s almost like the advent of fire, the pill and TiVo all at once. On the flip side, that giant crack of thunder you just heard was all the agents who represent professional athletes pretending to sneeze “assholes” into their hands.

It sounds like as he reaches each benchmark, A-Rod gets paid a bonus of $6 million. First there’s Willie Mays’ 660, The Babe’s 714, Hank Aaron’s 755, Barry Bonds’ 762* and finally a $6 million home run – No. 763. Starting the 2008 season, A-Rod has 518 career home runs and averages about 37 home runs a season. At that rate he still needs to be producing at a high level for another six seasons. That will make him 38 years old, which is apparently past the point when people continue being productive members of society and are put on an ice floe to die alone.

To realistically have a chance at getting paid all of his money, he will have to have Hank Aaron/Barry Bonds-type production in the twilight of his career. Aaron became a monster after his 35th birthday, smashing a Hulk-like 245 home runs. Bonds took it even further, or as some may indict speculate - too far, with 351 major league dingers by swinging to the record books and ending the 2007 season with 762*.

Love or hate A-Rod… it doesn’t matter. He’s going to play to get paid, and knowing the player’s situations will give you an edge with Bodog Live.
