Turfway Park Racetrack offers year-round thoroughbred racing. Located in Florence, Kentucky, Turfway Park sits near the northern border close to Ohio and Indiana. Florence has a population of 27,000, and relies on large manufacturing and commercial business to thrive.
Located 10 minutes from downtown, Turfway Park offers exciting horse-racing action and a clubhouse that offers a quality dining experience. The track opened in 1959 as Latonia Race Course and was renamed in 1986. Some of the large races Turfway Park holds are the $500,000 Lane's End Stakes and the $350,000 Kentucky Cup Classic Handicap.
In 1997, Churchill Downs joined forces with three investors to purchase Turfway Park at an auction for $11 million. Things began to turn around in 1998, when live racing resumed with a seven-day schedule, running in conjunction with Turfway's September meet.
In 1999, Kentucky Downs experienced another increase of 13.5 percent in betting and Turfway still enjoyed holding races on weekends.
In September 2005, Turfway Park became the first North American racetrack to replace their dirt track with a Polytrack racing surface. Polytrack is a mixture of synthetic and natural materials that drains water quickly, remains consistent no matter what the weather and is proving to be safer for both horses and riders.
