About Suffolk Downs Racetrack

Suffolk Downs, a thoroughbred race track in East Boston, Mass., opened in 1935 after pari-mutuel wagering was legalized in the state. On July 10, 1935, Suffolk Downs held its maiden race in front of 35,000 fans.

Racing continued at Suffolk Downs through World War II and on Aug. 12, 1943, the track donated $625,000 to the National War Fund, the largest contribution by any sports venue in support of the war effort. Suffolk Downs broke another record in 1948 when the track's opening meet attracted 35,529 fans, the largest opening day crowd ever.

During the 1960s, Suffolk Downs established a single-day handle record of $2,175,836, a mark that stood until the advent of simulcasting in the '90s. On Aug. 18, 1966, The Beatles played an infield concert at the track in front of over 25,000 fans. It was the group's last appearance in Boston.

Between 1990 and 1991 there was no racing at Suffolk. In 1992, a deal was brokered between Suffolk Downs and Rockingham Park allowing racing to return. In 1995, the Massachusetts Handicap returned from a six-year hiatus and Cigar won the race.

Suffolk Downs features a 1-mile dirt oval. There is also a seven-furlong inner turf oval. Other famous horses who have raced at Suffolk Downs include Seabiscuit and Whirlaway.
