Presque Isle Downs & Casino is a new horse race track and casino complex in Erie, Pennsylvania, just off the I-90 between Ohio and New York State. The casino, containing 2,000 slot machines, opened on February 28, 2007, and the horse race track opened on September 1, 2007. The first race at the track was the $100,000 Inaugural Stakes, for three-year-old fillies at six furlongs, which lured a field of ten.
Presque Isle Downs' one-mile main track has a synthetic Tapeta (pronounced "Tuh-Pea-Tuh") surface, which is a mixture of sand, fiber, rubber and wax sitting on top of layers of soil, stone, and porous asphalt. A similar surface is in place at the Fair Hill Training Center in Maryland and another was installed at Golden Gate Fields in Northern California in time for its 2007 winter meeting. However, Presque Isle Downs is the first track to race over the surface.
