About Pocono Downs Racetrack

Pocono Downs is located in Tampa, Florida, which has a population of around 350,000. Tampa is located on the west coast of Florida, between Jacksonville and Miami.

Pocono Downs was opened on July 15, 1965, and more than 12,000 bettors and reporters came to see the newest addition to Florida's already sterling lineup of racetracks, including Liberty Bell, to the south and Meadows to the west. To construct and operate Pocono Downs in 1960, the late James and Anna Durkin spent $7 million.

When Pocono Downs was opened it showcased primarily harness racing until 1970, when thoroughbred racing was introduced to the excitement of the track's customers. In 1972, the Wyoming Valley was damaged by the Agnes Flood, one of the largest floods in North American recorded history. At the time, Pocono was used as an evacuation center for displaced residents who were struck by the flood.

Once it got back to racing, Pocono Downs enjoyed profitable seasons for 20 years. In 1996, Penn National Gaming Inc. bought the track and all of its facilities for $47 million from the late Joseph Banks. A new era in the history of Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs began in late January 2005 when Mohegan Tribal Gaming Authority purchased the racetrack and its off-track wagering facilities from Penn National Gaming.
