Fairmount Racetrack is located in Illinois near the small town of Collinsville. In 1925, Fairmount opened under the ownership of Churchill Downs and had fairly steady success for four years until it was sold in 1929. In 1947, Fairmount became the only one-mile racetrack in the world with night lighting. People reportedly came "from Europe and Australia to see the spectacle." The following year, Fairmount began harness racing and conducted what was said to be the first night harness race over a mile track in the United States.
Fairmount has witnessed increasing success with its new finish-line luxury boxes that can entertain up to six bettors for a surprisingly low daily fee. Fairmount is also the only racetrack in North America that turns a section of its grandstand into a high-end service area called Potato Land. This is basically the same idea as a box seat but instead of seats, Fairmount has leather couches that line the grandstand so clients can rent a couch for the day and have refreshments and appetizers served to them right at the track.
