Evangeline Downs Racetrack is known as the first "Racino" built in America, from the ground up. The property consists of nearly 750 acres and houses 1,000 stalls on the backside, with a pond in the infield.
Many of the world's finest jockeys have started their careers in "Cajun Country" at Lafayette, Louisiana's Evangeline Downs. The list includes Randy Romero, Eddie Delahoussaye, Ray Sibille, Shane Sellers, Mark Guidry, Curt Bourque, Ronald Ardoin, Calvin Borel, Robbie Albarado and multiple Eclipse Award winner Kent Desormeaux. On the equine side, the great John Henry won his first stakes race at Evangeline, capturing the Lafayette Futurity on Sept. 5, 1977. In November 1988, Evangeline Downs made Louisiana racing history when it became the sole recipient of the first intertrack wagering signal in the state, simulcasting races from the New Orleans Fair Grounds.
