Hopes for a 2007 Triple Crown winner vanished in the 132nd Preakness Stakes on Saturday, May 19, 2007 when Curlin nipped Street Sense at the wire and won by a head. His final time of 1:53.46 tied the Preakness Stakes record for 1 3/16 miles, held jointly by Louis Quatorze (1966) and Tank's Prospect (1985). With Hard Spun finishing in third place, the result was a repeat of the one-two-three finishers from the Kentucky Derby, but this time in a different order. C P West rounded out the top four finishers.

A record crowd of 121,263 spectators at Pimlico Race Course watched on as Xchanger led the nine contenders through the opening furlong of the 1 3/16-mile race. Hard Spun made his move after half a mile and continued to lead until Street Sense charged to the front in the upper stretch and led by a length and a half with only a furlong to finish. The Derby winner appeared to be on his way to victory when Curlin, who Street Sense had passed when he began to mount his charge, inched up on the leader and outran him in the final stride.
Street Sense finished second, four lengths ahead of third-place finisher Hard Spun. The also rans, in order of finish, were C P West, Circular Quay, King of the Roxy, Mint Slewlep, Xchanger and Flying First Class.
