Trained by Richard Violette Jr., Summer Doldrums broke his maiden on the third try but then ended his two-year-old campaign finishing seventh in the $200,000 Remsen Stakes (G2) at Aqueduct.
Opened his three-year-old season with an allowance win at Aqueduct and then had a 5 1/4-length victory in the $65,000 Whirlaway Stakes at the same track. Finished behind Cowtown Cat and Wafi City in the $200,000 Gotham Stakes (G3) at Aqueduct. Led the $750,000 Wood Memorial Stakes (G3) at Aqueduct on April 7, but retreated in the stretch and finished fourth.
Summer Doldrums earned a Beyer Speed Figure of 106 in the $65,000 Whirlaway Stakes, the best number of any three-year-old so far this year. However, his performance in the Wood Memorial Stakes knocked him off the Derby trail, as his earnings are well below the present cutoff point.
