2008 Breeders' Cup Watch

A weekly review of the top five horses in the Classic, Turf, Mile and Sprint divisions.

BREEDERS' CUP CLASSIC

Grade:1

Purse: $5 million

Distance: 1 1/4 miles

Age: 3-year-olds and up

Week of: October 6th, 2008

Curlin's victory in the Jockey Club Gold Cup at Belmont Park was enough to convince his connections that he should be in the Breeders' Cup Classic and face off against Big Brown as long as training over Santa Anita's synthetic surface goes well. Irish-bred Duke of Marmalade seems likely for the Classic after his seventh-place finish in the Arc de Triomphe last weekend in France.

1 Curlin 6-5-1-0 $5,039,000 1st, Jockey Club Gold Cup (G1)
Belmont Park, September 27th, 2008
Details

Only an hour after winning the Jockey Club Gold Cup easily over a wet track at Belmont, owner Jess Jackson and trainer Steve Asmussen announced that Curlin was off to Santa Anita to train for the Classic and a much anticipated match-up with Big Brown. As long as the 4-year-old colt reacts well to the synthetic surface of the track, all systems will be go.

2 Big Brown 7-6-0-0 $3,576,700 1st, Monmouth Stakes
Monmouth Park, September 13th, 2008
Details

In his last prep before the Breeders' Cup Classic, Big Brown returned to Monmouth Park, where he had previously won the Haskell, to take the Monmouth Stakes. Racing against older horses for the first time and on grass, he took a quick and clear lead and then shook off Proudinsky coming down the stretch.

3 Duke of Marmalade 6-5-0-0 £1,100,165 7th, Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe (G1)
Longchamp, October 5th, 2008
Details

After coming into the fall with a perfect five-for-five season, Duke of Marmalade faltered for the first time in the Arc de Triomphe and finished seventh, behind the French filly Zarkava, rival Soldier of Fortune and others. Still happy with his performance given the strength of field and ground, trainer Aidan O'Brien signalled the Breeders' Cup Classic a more likely next start for his colt than the Turf.

4 Go Between 6-2-4-0 $1,600,080 1st, Pacific Classic (G1)
Del Mar, August 24th, 2008
Details

After two runner-up finishes in the Santa Anita Handicap and Hollywood Gold Cup, this five-year-old finally broke through at Del Mar and edged fellow Classic contender Well Armed out by a neck to win the Gr. 1 Pacific Classic. That victory secures him a spot in the big race on October 25th.

5 Commentator 5-4-1-0 $1,025,000 1st, Massachusetts Handicap (G1)
Saratoga, September 20th, 2008
Details

Put away the rest of the Massachusetts Handicap field at Suffolk Downs, winning by more than 14 lengths. His Whitney Handicap win at Saratoga has already guaranteed him a spot in the Classic for trainer Nick Zito, but given the synthetic surface at Santa Anita he isn't yet a confirmed starter.

BREEDERS' CUP turf

Grade:1

Purse: $3 million

Distance: 1 1/2 miles

Age: 3-year-olds and up

Week of: October 6th, 2008

The biggest Turf prep last weekend took place in France, the Gr. 1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp. The sensational undefeated filly Zarkava easily beat the field of boys but it was announced afterwards that she will rest the remainder of the season and miss the Breeders' Cup. Second- and third-place finishers, Youmzain and Soldier of Fortune, all move up this list as a result of their performances. Duke of Marmalade has been removed as he is more likely to run in the Classic.

1 Soldier of Fortune 2-2-0-0 £432,834 3rd, Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe (G1)
Longchamp, October 5th, 2008
Details

Aidan O'Brien-trained runner was favored in Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud where he just failed to catch Youmzain, who he beat in the Gr. 1 Coronation Cup at Ascot in the pair's previous meeting. They met again on October 5th in the Arc de Triomphe and finished 2-3 behind French filly Zarkava.

2 Youmzain 5-1-2-1 £979,864 2nd, Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe (G1)
Longchamp, October 5th, 2008
Details

Winner of the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud over Soldier of Fortune, he's known to ship around the world for top races (including two trips to Dubai for the Sheema Classic on turf) and may appear in the Breeders' Cup Turf now following his second-place finish behind Zarkava in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe.

3 Red Rocks 3-2-0-0 $380,000 1st, Man o' War Handicap H. (G1)
Belmont Park, July 12th, 2008
Details

Recent Man o' War Handicap victory over Curlin is enough to move the 2006 Breeders' Cup Turf winner into contention. Finished sixth, 7 1/2 lengths behind the top pair, in the Gr. 1 Coronation Cup at Epsom in his last start before shipping to the U.S. Will go straight to the Breeders' Cup Turf.

4 Grand Couturier 4-2-0-1 $672,895 1st, Joe Hirsch Turf Classic (G1)
Belmont Park, September 27th, 2008
Details

After a surprise victory in Sword Dancer last month at Saratoga, returned to demolish the Joe Hirsch field at Belmont last weekend by more than 10 lengths over a yielding turf course. Will return to the BC Turf after a sixth-place finish in the race last year at Monmouth Park.

5 Winchester 5-2-1-0 £138,901 1st, Secretariat Stakes (G1)
Arlington, August 9th, 2008
Details

Dermot Weld-trained 3-year-old won impressively at Arlington in the Secretariat Stakes with a finishing time two seconds faster than that of the Arlington Million the same day. The Secretariat was Winchester's first start in the US after racing mainly in Ireland earlier this year.

BREEDERS' CUP Mile

Grade:1

Purse: $2 million

Distance: 1 miles (turf)

Age: 3-year-olds and up

Week of: October 6th, 2008

Thorn Song won the Shadwell Mile at Keeneland last weekend. Hyperbaric won the Oak Tree Mile as the race favorite at Santa Anita on September 27th while two European runners faced off in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Ascot the same day. Raven's Pass had the better of Henrythenavigator over the mile race this time, and the connections of both announced they may run in the Breeders' Cup Classic rather than the Mile.

1 Henrythenavigator 6-4-1-0 £773,820 2nd, Queen Elizabeth II Stakes (G1)
Ascot, September 27th, 2008
Details

Aidan O'Brien's star 3-year-old bounced back after a disappointing finish at Longchamp last out to come second to rival Raven's Pass at Ascot in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes. Still waiting to hear confirmation of whether he will run in the Classic or the Mile at Santa Anita, but prefer him here.

2 Raven's Pass 7-2-4-0 £303,934 1st, Queen Elizabeth II Stakes (G1)
Ascot, September 27th, 2008
Details

Finally edged out his rival Henrythenavigator in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Ascot last weekend and won a trip to the BC Mile in doing so. The US-bred 3-year-old may run in the Classic instead according to his connections. Will have to wait and see.

3 Whatsthescript 3-2-1-0 $410,000 1st, Del Mar Mile (G2)
Del Mar, August 24th, 2008
Details

Caught front-running Daytona to win the Del Mar Mile after finishing a strong second in the Eddie Read Handicap. Trainer John Sadler has announced that he'll go straight to the Breeders' Cup Mile now.

4 Kip Deville 3-2-0-0 $279,192 5th, Woodbine Mile (G1)
Woodbine, September 7th, 2008
Details

Last year's Breeders' Cup Mile winner followed two strong victories this year with an unusually poor fifth-place performance in the Woodbine Mile. He ran second in the Canadian race last year before going on to success in the Breeders' Cup so we will see if he can turn things around again this year.

5 Goldikova 6-3-2-1 £441,978 1st, Prix du Moulin (G1)
Longchamp, September 7th, 2008
Details

Bred in Ireland but based in France, this three-year-old filly just continues to improve. With a victory over Darjina and Henrythenavigator at Longchamp, she extended her streak of Group wins to three. Her connections announced after the race that she will come to the Breeders' Cup, either for the Mile or the Filly & Mare Turf.

BREEDERS' CUP Sprint

Grade:1

Purse: $2 million

Distance: 6 furlongs

Age: 3-year-olds and up

Week of: October 6th, 2008

Two big prep races on September 27th both had big upsets, with Cost of Freedom holding off Street Boss at the wire in the Ancient Title at Santa Anita, and Black Seventeen doing the same to Fabulous Strike in the Vosburgh at Belmont Park. Bustin Stones, who was expected to return in the Vosburgh, didn't enter and it remains to be seen if he will have a prep race before the Breeders' Cup Sprint.

1 Street Boss 8-6-2-0 $587,900 2nd, Ancient Title S. (G1)
Santa Anita, September 27th, 2008
Details

Lost by a neck to former claimer Cost of Freedom in the Ancient Title at Santa Anita but this was his first loss of 2008 and his late move still looked impressive enough to keep him at the top of this list.

2 Fabulous Strike 2-1-1-0 n/a 2nd, Vosburgh S. (G1)
Belmont Park, September 27th, 2008
Details

Making only his second start of the season due to numerous minor injuries, he battled longshot Black Seventeen through the stretch and was narrowly defeated in Vosburgh, a race he won last year. Connections say he was running with a bent shoe and expect him to perform better in the Sprint.

3 Bustin Stones 3-3-0-0 $355,500 1st, Carter H. (G1)
Aqueduct, April 25th, 2008 "
Details

Four-year-old still hasn't started since his win in the Carter Handicap in April. He was scratched as the morning-line favorite from Vanderbilt at Saratoga in July due to a bruised right front foot and was expected to run in the Vosburgh last weekend at Belmont but didn't enter.

4 Abraaj 3-2-0-1 $310,000 1st, Alfred G. Vanderbilt H. (G1)
Saratoga, July 26th, 2008
Details

Stable mate of Lucky Island is quickly becoming a challenger. The Gr. 1 Alfred G. Vanderbilt victory on July 26th was his third consecutive sprint posting a big number. Only loss this year came when third behind Benny the Bull in True North 'Cap.

5 Cost of Freedom 8-5-1-2 $328,752 1st, Ancient Title S. (G1)
Santa Anita, September 27th, 2008
Details

Claimed only two months ago for $50,000 while at Del Mar, John Sadler-trained gelding has won his next two starts including a surprise victory over Street Boss in the Ancient Title at Santa Anita. Though the Sprint will be another big step up, holding off the top horse in the division at the wire earned him a spot here.
