Detroit Tigers starting pitcher Mike Maroth has started the 2003 MLB season by going 0-7. Bodog Sportsbook, Casino and Poker has posted odds on whether or not Maroth will lose 20 games this season.
"Nobody has lost 20 games in a single season since Brian Kingman in 1980," said Bodog President, Rob Gillespie. "Maroth has certainly given himself a head start by losing 7 games in a little over a month."
Bodog's linemakers figure even the betting public will be cheering for Maroth to stay clear of this dubious distinction and have posted the odds as follows:
Loses >20 Games -165
Loses <20 Games +125
"When putting this line together you have to consider a number of different factors," said Gillespie. "Will the Tigers continue to let him pitch? Will he be sent down to Triple-A? Will he be moved to the bullpen?"
Kingman finished the 1980 season 8-20 for the Oakland Athletics to become the 15th player between 1971 and 1980 to post 20 losses. Albie Lopez lost 19 games for the Arizona Diamondbacks and Tampa Bay Devil Rays in 2001.
"One thing we really pride ourselves on is the ability to offer original and unique props for our players," said Gillespie. "Obviously this is something that fits the bill."
